124 Alfred
DETROIT, MI
*design completed as part of design team at Hamilton Anderson Associates
The Flats at 124 Alfred were the first of six apartment buildings to open at the City Modern development in Detroit's historic Brush Park neighborhood. The five-story, 81,686 SF development features a total of 54 one- and two-bedroom units and below-grade parking for residents aged 55 and older.
Strategically situated at the corner of John R and Alfred Streets, this mixed-use apartment building contributes to an active streetfront with ground floor retail along John R and residential entrances along Alfred Street. Conceived as a single volume that wraps and holds the corner, the building form steps down and becomes more rhythmic and residentially scaled at Alfred street. The street façades feature double height recessed balconies and other strategic recesses to accommodate both variation in building program and playful unit distribution. The recessed balconies lined in red metal panels contrast with the primary skin of multi-toned gray vertical gray panels.
