University of Detroit Mercy Student Center Renovation
DETROIT, MI
*design completed as part of design team at Hamilton Anderson Associates
The Expansion/Renovation of the Student Union at UDM strategically utilizes existing spaces while adding needed new square footage. The project intends to modernize facilities for staff and amplify offerings to its student body. On the main level, the design calls for consolidation of Admissions,
Financial Aid, Student Accounting and the Office of the Registrar on a single floor and develops a strategy for shared support space while maintaining individual departments.
The underutilized lower level is slated to house Student Life, University Ministry and the University Bookstore centered around a generous student lounge. The lounge will offer a variety of spaces, including a commuter kitchen, areas for quiet study, pool tables, gathering spaces and TV area. To
bring natural light to the lower level, a recessed plaza will be carved out of the existing landscape. The plaza will be designed as an extension of the interior lounge and feature steps that can double as auditorium seating for special events. The goal is to create an inviting, multi-use space that provides a truly user-focused environment for students, faculty, staff and alumni.
